I had to be careful getting back home so Sheila wouldn’t think anything had happened. The last thing I needed was her being afraid I was going to attract some unwanted attention at the wedding. Sadly, my efforts were in vain as I walked in on her and my dad eating breakfast at the kitchen table.

They looked up at me with surprise as I walked in, probably looking like I’d just gotten laid.

“Hi honey, want any toast?” my dad asked kindly, pretending he didn’t notice my appearance. Sheila was much less subtle about hiding her surprise at the way I looked and rolled her eyes at my dad.

“I’m fine, thanks, dad. I think I’m going to lie down for a little bit.”

“Everything okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. Just get me for the rehearsal.”

“It’s not until tomorrow,” said Sheila in a clipped voice. “If you had been around last night, you would have known that.”

I ignored her and went upstairs. She hadn’t changed very much at all. I wondered what I’d done to make her hate me so much. Did she feel like I wouldn’t accept her because she wasn’t my real mom? Did she want dad’s money all to herself?

My dad was the vice president of the main bank in town and made pretty good money. I wouldn’t say I was spoiled growing up, but I was well off ever since he’d started working there many years ago. Now, he was on his way up the ladder and was doing amazing for himself. I just hoped that if Sheila was after his money, he’d be able to see through her.

Ever since my mom had died when I was sixteen, my dad hadn’t been the same. His personality was still there and he was still the same wonderful man I’d grown up with. But he’d gotten weaker. His resolve wasn’t quite the same. He’d met Sheila almost a year after I left and they’d been together ever since.

It had been a long relationship, so I could understand why they wanted to get married after six years, but I still didn’t know what my dad saw in Sheila. Sure, you could call her a knockout. She was much younger than he was, only a few years older than me. But she was nothing like my father, at least that’s how she came across to me. Maybe it was an opposites attract type of thing. But my dad seemed to like her enough to marry her, so that was fine with me.

But Sheila wasn’t my main concern right now. Now, I just wanted to pick out a nice dress for the rehearsal tomorrow and figure out what I was going to do about Reid. I looked around my old bedroom, smiling fondly. My dad had kept it just the way I’d had it all those years ago. All my old dolls still stood silently on the shelves right next to all the movie star posters plastered along the walls.
